3-card monte, scalpels, spotters, undercover cops

Getting back to the ticket scalpers, I’ve always seen them taking New Jersey transit through Penn Station throughout the years but I never really focused on them like I do now. Tonight, I was setting myself up to get people coming out of the cabs, people going to the concert and the scalpers were all over the place. Whenever I come by with the camera, they move around, whatever.

The funny thing is that they have a spotter. They’re scalping, doing their business and they got their backers behind them – they’re spotters. So the spotter’s spotting me, making these hand gestures, the scalpers are moving around and I know there are undercover cops there too. The undercover cops are watching the scalpers. The scalpers are watching undercover cops and then lookouts are watching I don’t know what.

But I had a blast photographing this tonight for my train got there. It reminds me back in the day I used to photograph the 3-card montes. They are rough tough crew and that’s very dangerous to photograph. But they got spotters on each corner and they make like a screaming whistle – not a whistle but I can’t even explain the noise like eeee and that means for them to break up the 3-card monte.

Same guys I see doing the 3-card monte from 20 years ago, 15 years ago, they’re doing it now. So they must be making money at it.

I love shooting in New York it’s just getting more and more exciting.

Anyway, Thursday, Friday, Saturday is going to be action packed by a lot of great parties. Signing off.
