Phone Store, Unlock Phones, Wannabe Gangsters, Rip-off Kids, Umbrellas

My new location, 35th and 6th. It’s a store called Rock and Soul. In the back is the DJ store that’s been there over 20 years – very high in DJ stuff stereo, very well known store. But in the front, a friend of mine opened up an electronic store. He shares that with a phone store.

The phone store is funny. It got all these kids between I guess 22 and 25, they’re Syrian Jews from Brooklyn. Brooklyn’s great, they got the Italian wannabe gangsters and then you have the Syrian salesman rip-off kids in the electronic world. So you’ve got three of these Syrian kids running around selling phones, overcharging and this and that and then you have the electronic store.

The guy I work for is great. He lets me stay outside all day, do my thing, get people in the store – I’m happy. I’m actually more happy than the 31st Street location with all the Indians. Probably I’m almost ready to do an expose on all these electronic stores.

But anyway, staying outside, photographing all these people from the garment district is fun for me because it’s different. The phone guys have a Black gentleman outside who just says all day, “Unlock phones, unlock phones,” he’s been a street dude in the garment district for like 30 years.  He introduced me to a couple, the top furriers in the fur district, I think I may be doing some kind of photo shoot with these old timers making their fur coats. That should be interesting for me.

Anyway, one funny thing about these fashion people who work in the fashion district, a lot of them stop and make an angry face while I’m taking pictures. The other street – it’s smooth and easy. This is the most difficult street in New York City so far. I don’t know why, I haven’t figured it out yet. Maybe they’re smarter, who knows?

Anyway, I’m going back to it today, I’m excited. Yesterday it rained so I got to shoot my umbrella pictures. These garment district people had designer umbrellas so a lot of color, a lot of really cool umbrellas.

Signing off.
